Young Georgian actors Elene Makharashvili and Nini Nebieridze are in shooting for Oscar-nominated director Phedon Papamichael's new thriller Light Falls, with the feature set to premiere next year.
The two are cast in the roster for the title based on a screenplay by Sven Dagones, with the plot involving a young couple spending their holiday at an abandoned hotel on a Mediterranean island. Dagones' script sees the protagonists sent into a "spiral of violence and revenge" after an accident.
Produced by Enkeny Films, Ska-Ndal and TopcutModiano, the feature also involves other names from Georgia, from actor Lasha Zambakhidze to co-producers Sophio Bendiashvili and Bacho Meburishvili.
Associate producers Irakli Rodonaya and Temur Ugulava are also involved in the team working on the drama.
It is the latest post-production work by Papamichael, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Cinematography in 2021 and 2014, for The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Nebraska respectively.
Makharashvili made her debut feature appearance in Valentina de Amicis and Riccardo Spinotti's 2019 drama Now Is Everything, where Irakli Kvirikadze - Georgia's 2018 recipient of the European Shooting Stars by the European Film Promotion.
Nebieridze was previously cast in filmmaker Giga Agladze's 2009 feature The Girl from Slide.
