A worker has fallen from a construction worksite in Nadzaladevi district in Tbilisi earlier today.

One other worker also fell and was injured and hospitalised.

“Work has been suspended at the construction worksite as the safety violations are discovered,” said Beka Peradze, the Head of the Labour Conditions Inspection Department.

An investigation has been launched into the possible violation of safety regulations, a crime punishable by six months to two years in prison.

A new law on labour safety came into effect in September 2019, the aim of which is to further strengthen workers’ rights to safe working conditions.

The law stipulates that labour safety laws apply not only to hazardous professions but to all sectors of  economic activity. According to the law, employers are obliged to appoint a certified labour safety specialist if they have more than 20 employees.

In total, 25 people died and 71 received injuries at the workplace in Georgia between January-June 2019.

The Labour Conditions Inspection Department carried out a total of 1,254 inspections and reinspections at construction sites in 2019, the Ministry of Health reported on January 28, 2020.
