Poti Maritime Academy, a branch of the Batumi Maritime Academy, has been opened in the Georgian port city of Poti which will be able to receive 1,000 students in 2021.

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said that about seven months ago, the site of this building was in ruins and no one could have imagined that in seven months, it would be possible to begin studies here.

Poti has always been Georgia's maritime gateway and the city will continue this mission in the future as well. All this is impossible without highly qualified staff”, Gakharia said.

He added that after graduating from the institution, Georgian sailors will have high-paying jobs both in Georgia and abroad.

Georgian-educated sailors are in very high demand in international flotillas; they sail on different oceans under various flags and their annual economic contribution to Georgia exceeds $140 million. This is a huge field", Gakharia stated.

Gakharia said that Black Sea port infrastructure is a priority for Georgia and the government in the coming years. He announced a few projects that are due to be completed in the next four years and that aim to revive Poti, said Gakharia.

The projects are:

  • Completing the construction of new port infrastructure and terminal
  • Building a bypass road to prevent freight from moving through Poti
  • Improving the road infrastructure
  • Improving water supply and drainage systems

"I would like to promise every one of you, however, that the next four years will be the years of Poti's revival and we must all understand that this is our common cause and we must all do this together", said Gakharia.
