Georgian experimental hip-hop band KayaKata have been nominated for the latest European Independent Album of The Year award for their release Sadaa, joining just over 20 artists from across the continent looking to earn the title.
The popular band is in the shortlist for the prize awarded by the Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA), a Brussels-based trade association established to support European independent record labels.
The young Georgian artists' album - released by LTFR, a web-based label releasing works by Georgian creatives - is one of 22 selections in what IMPALA Executive Chair Helen Smith called a "great shortlist".
As well as different styles of music, the shortlist is also a window into Europe’s linguistic diversity. Discover KayaKata, a hip-hop duo who rap in Georgian, The Young Gods using Moliere’s language, Vladimír Mišík who sings in Czech, Ultimo in Italian and more" - IMPALA
The list also features artists including Serbian electro pop duo Buč Kesidi, Hungarian indie pop band Goodbye Darjeeling and celebrated Danish composer Trentemøller.
Released last summer, Sadaa includes 11 tracks and was praised by local reviews following its release - a Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty review gave it a 9/10 score and called it "the peak" of the band's creative work so far.
First emerging in 2007 with a previous project, artists of the band have been recognised for their experimental sound along with relevance to urban subculture and social themes of contemporary Georgia.
Their previous honours include the 2018 Electronauts Video of the Year Award from the platform celebrating local experimental and electronic music talent.
The winner for the European Independent Album of The Year will be revealed next month.
