Police have detained a Latvian citizen in Georgia’s coastal city of Batumi for physical and psychological violence against his wife and failure to comply with the requirements of a restraining order.
Police say the detainee, identified only as D.G., threatened to kill his wife, Russian citizen O.B., with a knife and physically assaulted her.
In addition, D.G. approached the place of temporary residence of his wife and tried to communicate with her on several occasions.
The press office of the Interior Ministry says that the detainee violated the terms and requirements of the restraining order issued against him for psychological abuse against his wife.
The crime is punishable by three years in prison.
A law which makes the punishment for certain forms of domestic violence more severe came into force in December 2018.
A total of 4,564 individuals were charged for domestic violence and crimes throughout Georgia in 2019.
