Gold, silver medals for Georgian wrestlers at Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Grand Slam

Georgian athletes Nodar Andguladze and Lado Barnovi earned medal-winning results at a Jiu-Jitsu World Tour Grand Slam event in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, returning from the competition with gold and silver medals respectively.

 

Andguladze, 40, was first in the 94kg weight category of the tournament that involved hundreds of competitors from around the world and in different age groups.

 

At the city’s Mubadala Arena, the wrestler finished ahead of counterparts Alvaro Aroca and local favourite Rashid Almansoori.

 

Currently ranked no. 5 in the world, the Georgian earned 100 points for his classification with the win.

 

The silver of the 85kg section went to Lado Barnovi, world no. 41, who finished behind United Arab Emirates’ Sultan al Shamsi and ahead of Jose Perez Mejia of El Salvador.

 

Barnovi, 25, lost to al Shamsi in the gold medal contest by points but earned 80 points for his second-place finish.

 

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam ran in the UAE city between January 10-12.
