Georgian First Vice Speaker speaks on women’s rights at the European Parliament Committee

First Vice Speaker and Chair of the Gender Equality Council of the Georgian Parliament Tamar Chugoshvili has delivered a speech on Gender Equality in Georgia at the European Parliament (EP) Committee today.

She put an emphasis on key aspects such as domestic violence and violence against women, discrimination and sexual abuse, women’s involvement in politics, economic strengthening of women and gender equality institutional mechanisms in Georgia.

Tamar Chugoshvili also stressed the ratification of the Istanbul Convention by Georgia and legal changes that facilitate the elimination of violence and the enhancement of preventive mechanisms.

She emphasized the establishment of the Human Rights Department in the Interior Ministry and setting up new regulations including the risk assessment mechanisms.

First Vice Speaker Chugoshvili referred to discrimination outlining sexual abuse regulations with the key contribution by the Gender Equality Council and civil society.

She started with women’s involvement in politics and introducing examples such as establishment of the Constituent Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Georgia 100 years ago when 5 women were elected as its members.

Tamar Chugoshvili noted that 15% of MPs are women in Georgia and the index is low.

She also emphasized that Georgia also elected a female president recently who is the first female president across the region.
