The law on tobacco control now stipulates that any individual smoking in public indoor places in Georgia will now be fined, reports the Tobacco Control Alliance.

Smoking in public spaces has been prohibited since 1 May 2018, however venue owners and administration were responsible for keeping their establishments smoke free.

Moreover, public places such as bars, restaurants and offices will be fined for placing ashtrays in public as well, even if empty.

Individuals violating the law and smoking in public spaces will be fined 100 GEL – repeated action will result in a 200 GEL fine, and increase 100 GEL for every violation thereafter.

Venue owners are obliged to demand that individuals abide by the law. If the individual does not obey the request, the public space will not be fined.

Should the establishment not demand that an individual refrain from smoking, the venue will be charged 500 GEL: if the violation is repeated, the fine will be doubled.
