A man arrested for murdering his teenage nephew has been sentenced to pretrial detention by Rustavi City Court today.

After the trial Prosecutor Levan Jalagania said there are grounds to believe that the detainee suffers from a mental disorder and this is why he was temporarily sent to an asylum yesterday.

However a new round of psychiatric testing will still be conducted.

The prosecutor said the analysis will make clear whether the detainee is subject to be held responsible for the crime adding he has never been registered in any asylum while he was convicted twice previously for robbery and physical assault.

The result will define whether he is to be held criminally responsible or provided with medical treatment,” the prosecutor stated.

The detainee’s lawyer Zura Dalakishvili says Iremadze should be sent to an asylum.

The next trial will be held on 4 April.

The man murdered his 13-year-old nephew in Rustavi on Monday.

Locals say that the brother and neighbors took him to a psychiatric hospital in Tbilisi before the fatality took place but the hospital refused to accept him as there were not enough beds.
