A total of 58,412 crimes were reported in 2018 in Georgia, of which 20,233 were solved, show data from Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Natia Mezvrishvili stated that the figures show that the number of registered crimes increased in Georgia in 2018 compared to 2017.

But we should take into account the fact that the statistics that we published today are based on an improved accounting of crime, according to which all cases are registered where there is even little evidence of the offense or the police have any suspicion of committing a crime”, said Mezvrishvili.

To compare, investigation started on 37,944 cases in 2017 of which 20,000 were solved.

The analysis of the crime shows that the severe crimes rate is either unchanged or decreased, and the increase comes mainly from those offenses which accounting have been significantly improved”, Mezvrishvili said.

The number of crimes committed against a person’s life stays the same in 2018 as it was in 2017 - 108,109 crimes.

Crime against property reduced by 2.5%, while crime against physical well-being reduced by 17.4%, said the ministry.
