Georgia to make public buildings more energy efficient with new €105 mln project

A total of €105 million will be spent to reconstruct public buildings in Georgia as part of a joint project carried out by the German Development Bank (KfW) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The budget of this project is a combination of low-interest loans of €80 million, an investment grant of €20 million and a €5 million grant for technical assistance.
The project will start in 2019, and will include the reconstruction of public buildings with energy efficient and renewable energy technologies.
The bill, Encouraging the Production and Use of Energy from Renewable Sources, has already been submitted to the Parliament of Georgia.
Twelve months after the law comes into force, the Ministry of Economy will develop a 10-year National Renewable Energy Action Plan and submit it to the government of Georgia for approval.
According to the bill, the target for the share of renewable energy in total final energy consumption is 29.5% by 2019 and 35% by 2030.
Solar power systems will be installed in 87 Georgian villages that are not hooked up to the national electricity grid in mountainous regions of Georgia. The government of Georgia will provide 178 permanent resident families of Mtskheta-Mtianeti, Shida Kartli, Samtskhe-Javakheti, Racha-Lechkhum –Kvemo Svaneti, Kakheti and Imereti with the solar panels.
A new factory has opened in Georgia’s third largest city of Kutaisi to produce solar panels that will be exported to the European Union, United States and Middle East. The factory was opened today by German company AE SOLAR, which is one of the world’s leaders in producing solar panels.
The government of Georgia has allocated 2 million GEL (about 0.73m/€0.65m) to install solar panels in areas of Georgia where there is still no consistent electricity supply.

In 2019, Georgian electricity imports increased by 7.5 per cent and exports decreased by 58.7 per cent.
