As an American polyphonic choir is touring Georgian cities and towns - performing songs by local composers and joining Georgian choral ensembles on the road - you can follow their experiences on social media.

The Capitol Hill Chorale, a 1993-founded choir led by Artistic Director Frederick Binkholder, launched their tour in the country last week looking to visit the country of origin of some of the music they perform.

From a walking tour of Tbilisi following their arrival, to joining the Georgian State Choir and singing for the President of Georgia, members of the Washington, D.C.-based ensemble have already enjoyed a taste of local hospitality and networking.

Visiting monuments in the historical capital of Mtskheta and the winemaking Kakheti province, the visiting singers reported "fabulous" opening days for the tour in the country - the birthplace of composer Zakaria Paliashvili, whose musical heritage has been a focus of research by the CHC.

In the former location they marked their arrival with an impromptu performance for one of the couples marrying in the popular wedding location.

In Kakheti, they unexpectedly found themselves in the company of president Salome Zurabishvili, on visit to the historical Tsinandali chateau of Georgian nobility.

The American choir offered their vocal rendition for the president, which followed an earlier opportunity for singing at the Bodbe Monastery, also in Kakheti, in the morning.

Acquaintance with Georgian cuisine and on-the-spot singing collaborations with local enthusiasts of vocal performances have been some of the other experiences the visiting group has found thrilling in Georgia.

The Capitol Hill Chorale has its next performance scheduled in western regional capital Kutaisi's Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They will also sing at the city's opera hall, before concluding the tour in Samtavisi Cathedral in central Georgia.

Beside offering their renditions of Georgian music throughout the tour, the Capitol Hill Chorale will also bring a selection of “America’s early musical traditions, spirituals, jazz, and modern interpretations of Shaker music”, a release by the group said.

The Chorale, which also performs commissioned works in addition to folk, jazz, and popular-song repertory, will be in Georgia with the support of the US Embassy in the country.
