5 banned from play after fixing Georgian football matches

Five football players, who admitted participation in fixing matches in Georgian leagues have been banned from play, the Georgian Football Federation announced earlier today.

Those banned from play are the members of FC Wit Georgia: Giorgi Getiashvili, Joni Sherozia, Nikoloz Maisuradze, Nodar Kiknavelidze and Paata Ghudushauri. They were released on 10,000 GEL [$3,600] bail back in May.

Apart from sanctioning the individual players, FC Wit Georgia lost six scores and was fined with 50,000 GEL ($18,248 /€16,286).

  • Four have been sent to pretrial detention and seven have been released on bail for fixing matches in the both minor and major leagues back in May;
  • The detainees, who were arrested last month are former and current footballers.

The Georgian State Security Service then reported that the organised group contacted footballers and concluded agreements with them to lose games.

As a result, FC Wit Georgia lost two goals down to FC Batumi Dinamo in the major league, according to a preliminary agreement, the Security Service stated on May 20.
