80 recycling bins for glass, paper and plastic were installed on Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi last night.

Old litter bins were removed from the street.

The new bins were placed as a part of a waste separation obligation Georgia has taken on under the Association Agreement with the EU.

Starting 2019, Georgia is to gradually adopt the waste separation model.

Rustaveli Avenue is not the first place where the waste separation bins have been installed. They have been available in different parts of the city, such as metro station ‘University’, Lisi Lake and others since 2018.

The Georgian coastal city of Batumi was the country’s first area to implement a recycling strategy in a bid to reduce pollution. In 2015, more than 100 recycling bins separating glass, paper and plastic were installed on the Batumi boulevard.

A new waste management code also takes effect in December, 2019, which obliges manufacturers to reduce negative environmental impact that may accompany a product’s production, use, waste recovery or disposal.

To note, underground waste containers will also be installed on Chavchavadze Avenue, Tbilisi.
