Georgia is capable of claiming a niche for itself on the world market in organic produce, said Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze at a meeting with young Georgian farmers today.

Bakhtadze said that agriculture will become one of the most successful fields in the country with the help of modern technologies and approaches.

We cannot be a mass producer of different produce, as can countries with more land. But we have unique nature and all the conditions to have a green economy… and organic produce. Demand for organic products has increased worldwide and this is exactly our niche”, said Bakhtadze.

Bakhtadze added that more investments and technologies are needed for taking this niche in the world, but he promised that the state will continue to support agriculture and farmers in Georgia.

I have a very specific answer to those who have questions about how right it is for the state to co-finance different agricultural projects. Last year we managed [to make] the export of Georgian agricultural products exceed over $1 billion. Also last year our farmers in Kakheti received the highest income [ever]. This was a historic maximum in the history of Georgia”, said Bakhtadze.

He said that the development of small and medium-sized businesses and increasing production volume in agriculture are the ways to fight poverty in Georgia.
