Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili and Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze have sent their best wishes to the new emperor of Japan Naruhito, who has succeeded his father Akihito, who abdicated at the age of 85, becoming the first Japanese emperor to do so in more than 200 years.
President Zurabishvili wrote in her tweet:
As Emperor Naruhito takes on the responsibilities of the Chrysanthemum Throne, I wish long peace and prosperity to the people of Japan in this new #令和 (#Reiwa) era.

Naruhito has promised to fulfill his role as a symbol of unity and the state.
Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze wrote in his tweet:
My sincere congratulations to the people of #Japan on H.I.H Emperor #Naruhito’s ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne. #Georgia and #Japan have long enjoyed strong bilateral bonds and friendship, and we are ready to work closely together to strengthen those ties even further.

The 59-year-old new emperor officially began his reign today in a short but symbolic ceremony at the Imperial Palace, the international media reports.
Emperor Akihito abdicated on April 30 after 30 years at the helm of the Chrysanthemum Throne.
