Skier Iason Abramashvili on podium in FIS Zagreb slalom event

Abramashvili claimed his first FIS podium since January 2018 in Zagreb.

Georgian skier Iason Abramashvili claimed a podium spot in an International Ski Federation (FIS) Men's Slalom competition in Croatia's Zagreb-Sljeme winter resort on Monday.

The athlete, 30, finished 1.92 seconds behind winner Max van Rossum of the Netherlands and Michal Staszowski of Poland to take the third place at the event where participants did two runs for their final results.

Featuring a start at 930 metres above sea level, the course finished 180 metres below and involved nearly 50 skiers from across the world.

The Georgian covered the distance of the first run, with 56 gates, in 48.94 seconds, while the second course, with 60 gates, took him 50.04 seconds.

The result is Abramashvili's first FIS podium finish in a year and follows his second place at the Croatian resort in January 2018.

Three more skiers from Georgia entered the slalom, with Besarion Japaridze falling short of finishing his second run while Soso Japharidze and Aleksi Beniaidze cutting short their participation in the first run.
