Today Georgia is celebrating a special day honouring mothers and pregnant women – Mother’s Day.
On this day, children gift their mothers an array of flowers and congratulatory cards and write letters to tell them how important they are.
Georgia is the second country that celebrates Mother’s Day annually on March 3. Norway was the first country to start the celebrations, however, it marks Mother’s Day on different dates each year.
This year Norway marked Mother’s Day on February 11.
Celebrating Mother’s Day in Georgia was established following the suggestion of the country’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia, and in 1991 the decision to celebrate the occasion was approved by the country’s Supreme Council.
The purpose of Mother's Day is to maintain the tradition of respect for women, to value their role in the family and appreciate their enduring efforts in the upbringing of children.
