Presidential election runoff: 47.31% voter turnout by 5 p.m.

1,662,453 voters, accounting for 47.31% of the  total number of voters, cast their ballots in the presidential runoff by 5 p.m., three hours before the polling stations will be closed, announces the Central Election Commission (CEC).

The highest voter turnout was reported in a small town in the Adjara region of Keda - 50.1%, while the lowest voter turnout was reported in the southern Georgian town of Tsalka – 37%.

To compare, in the first round of presidential election on October 28, 5 p.m. voter turnout stood at 38.16% – 1,337,284 people had voted by that time.

The total number of voters on the list is 3,528,658 as was published by the Central Election Commission.

The first round took place on 28 October, however neither candidate was able to receive more than half of the votes in order to be elected.

In the first round of the presidential elections Salome Zurabishvili, backed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, received 38.64% of total votes, while Grigol Vashadze, the opposition candidate from the United National Movement, received 37.74% of voters’ ballots. Total voter turnout was 45.4%.
