MIA arrests 10 individuals for kidnapping a citizen from Tbilisi

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has detained 10 members of a criminal group responsible for kidnapping a Georgian citizen in Tbilisi.
The arrested individuals face nine to 14 years of imprisonment.
The investigators said that the criminal gang kidnapped a Georgian citizen born in 1995. The father of the kidnapped individual has reported to the police that the criminals demanded a large amount of money from him as a ransom by phone. Otherwise they threatened to kill his son.
The Georgian media reports that the amount of the demanded ransom was about three million GEL (more than 1.1 million USD).
The police found the kidnapped individual in a village in Imereti in western Georgia and returned him to safety.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has arrested six individuals for membership in the ‘criminal underworld’. Head of the Main Division of the Fight against Organised Crime Mamuka Chelidze said at today’s briefing that the detainees were involved in criminal activities supporting the 'criminal underworld'.
The Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Natia Mezvrishvili has stated that 53 individuals were detained for committing violent crimes in 2018 so far.
The Georgian Interior Ministry and Greek police have detained 17 members of a criminal group as the result of a joint investigation today in Athens.
According to statistics, a total of 35,997 crimes were reported in the country during 2016. Of these, 20,661 or 57.4 percent have been solved.
