The Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Natia Mezvrishvili has stated that 53 individuals were detained for committing violent crimes in 2018 so far.

  • 39 have been detained for gender and sex crimes.
  • 10 have been detained for crimes committed on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity.
  • 4 have been detained for crimes of discrimination on ethnic grounds

Police have launched an investigation into violent crimes in more than 50 cases.

Mezvrishvili stated that the figures of 2018 were higher than in the previous year, which was because of a raised awareness of the public and the law-enforcers about hate and violent crimes.
