The opening ceremony of the European Week of Sport at Rike Park has been attended by government officials, representatives of the Georgian National Olympic Committee and national sports federations today.
Around 200,000 people will be involved in the event being held around the country over the course of a week. Nighttime sporting activities are planned for September 29 while on September 30 a closing ceremony will be held in Tbilisi.
Georgia has joined the European Commission’s initiative for the first time this year. The idea behind the EC’s initiative that has been around since 2015 is that being active is the solution to problems such as: obesity, loneliness, racism, depression and others. The initiative seeks to encourage people to join sport clubs and fitness centres and live an active life.
Around 40 countries join in on the week of sport this year from September 23 to 30 involving more than nine million people globally.
