Latvian-born Russian and American dancer, choreographer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov has been awarded honorary citizenship of Tbilisi.
Baryshnikov is visiting Georgia to perform in the Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre which was opened by the play Brodsky / Baryshnikov at the Kote Marjanishvili Theatre.
Brodsky / Baryshnikov is a one-man show based on the poems of Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky, performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov.
“Baryshnikov is the symbol of freedom and we are grateful that he has chosen Tbilisi, Georgia among other post-Soviet states,“ Deputy Tbilisi Mayor Sophio Khuntsaria said after the play.
Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre is being held for the tenth time this year. The festival which is one of the most influential cultural events throughout the Caucasus and Eastern Europe will last until September 30.
Hahn met with Georgia’s State Minister of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Victor Dolidze in Brussels yesterday. Dolidze congratulated the EU Commissioner on becoming an honorary citizen of Tbilisi.
Tbilisi’s Kote Marjanishvili State Drama Theatre, one of the major Georgian troupes, will have its own town on the outskirts of the capital city.
A line-up of Georgian theatre directors, dramatists and other professionals will launch the first edition of New Drama Festival, an event celebrating experimental stage art, in Tbilisi this Sunday.
Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre has been nominated among the 26 favourites of the international jury that will compete for a prestigious European award on September 18 in Brussels, Belgium.
