Georgia’s Special State Protection Service has initiated changes through which the country’s presidents and their family members will not have state-funded personal guards throughout their lifetime.
The current law obliges the Special Protection Service of Georgia to protect presidents and their families after the president’s term in the post expiries until the end of his/her life.
The initiated changes, which have already been submitted to the parliament for discussion, say that the Georgian president, prime minister and parliament chair will benefit from state protection service only for one year after their official term expires.
The service may be prolonged if the life and health of the president, the prime minister or the parliament speaker are at risk.
