Georgian fencers score highest-ever result at World Championships

The Georgian Men’s Fencing National Team has set its highest international result ever after finishing fourth at the World Fencing Championships in China.

The Georgian team reached semifinals of the tournament after defeating the United States in the Last 16 and Iran in the quarterfinals.

The fixture against the US finished with the final score 45:38, with the encounter against the World No. 4 team of Iranian athletes ending 45:37.

In the subsequent semifinal the four fencers of the Georgian squad lost out to South Korea with a score 34:45 and headed for the one remaining match for third place, against Hungary.

Even though the team of Sandro Bazadze, Mikheil Mardaleishvili, Beka Bazadze and Vazha Retchia condeded to Hungarians 36:45, their display at the tournament marked the highest-ever finishing at the world championships for their country.

Ranked 12th in the world before the competition, the Georgian squad is expected to be promoted in the classification to reflect their success.

The World Fencing Championships are hosted at the Wuxi Sports Centre in the city of Wuxi near Shanghai, China.
