Deputy Executive Director of Georgia’s National Statistics Tengiz Tsekvava says that based on the 2014 census, the population of Georgia was 3.7 million, which is lower in comparison to previous years.

In 2002 the Georgian population amounted to 4,3 million, while the figure in 1989 was 5,5 million,” Tsekvava said.

He said that the two key reasons of the decrease are a "big migration of people and aging.”

The collapse of the Soviet Union, civil confrontations in Georgia and poverty made a huge influence on the country, as many young people had left for abroad,” Tsaava said and added the previous unfavorable situations are still impacting the number of population.
In the first six months of the year, for the first time, the number of deaths outnumbered the births”, he said.

The deputy head stated that a range of activities needed to be carried out to improve the situation, especially in terms of the socioeconomic reality of the country.
