Census 2014 underway in Georgia

Georgia has launched its first Census in 12 years.

The Census 2014 will measure a number of vital statistical information and will continue for 15 days.

The new census is expected to reveal a significant population decrease resulting from high emigration rates and low fertility.

GeoStat, the country’s National Statistics Office, are responsible for carrying out the survey, which will see about 12,300 employees go door-to-door and survey every citizen and foreign resident in Georgia.

The census will also record the level of agricultural activity.

"The operation, with its scale and content, represents a unique source of data and information on the social, economic and demographic state of the population,” Meri Duashvili, GeoStat’s executive director told European news publication Business News Europe (BME).

Surveying will take place from November 5-19 across the country, with the exception of Georgia’s two breakaway regions Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).

The census will determine the population size and how its composed (gender, age) employment rate level of education and health, livelihood and household conditions, agricultural activities and more.

Meanwhile residents in 382 villages in Georgia’s mountainous areas were surveyed in September as bad weather was forecast for November.

The last Census took place in 2002.
