Georgia has bipartisan support from the United States (US), says US Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly.

The US diplomat made several comments reiterating the fact the US firmly stood behind Georgia following a major decision by the US House of Representatives.

Kelly said he wasn’t surprised that the House of Representatives had overwhelmingly approved an annual defence policy bill where Georgia was assessed as a "valuable friend” and he stressed Georgia had support from the country's two main parties.

Georgia is a valuable friend of the US having confirmed its devotedness to promoting the mutual interests of the two countries including deployment of Georgian troops in Afghanistan,” the US Defence Policy Bill 2017 read.

The document could be taken up by the US Senate this week.

Meanwhile Kelly praised Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili’s plan for stimulating economic growth in Georgia.

"The Prime Minister has a really good plan. We support it,” he said.

A major part of our assistance is directed to economic growth. But currently there are many challenges in the region itself, and Georgia, too, has to face these challenges. So it’s a little bit difficult period of time but there is a plan and works are in place to implement it.”
