Concert venues in Georgia's capital are gearing up to host a line-up of global jazz stars over four days for the 2016 Tbilisi Jazz Festival.
Later this evening the 2016 Tbilisi Jazz Festival will officially launch and continue until November 13. This year is the 19th annual festival and during the four-day event two international artists and two bands will showcase their award-winning skills and sound.
The festival will open with a show at the Tbilisi Concert Hall by Jamie Cullum - an Englishman lauded as the most successful British jazz artist of all time. The young Grammy-winning artist will perform in Georgia for the first time after his scheduled performance at this year's Black Sea Jazz Festival in July was cancelled.
Cullum boasts numerous awards and nominations from various music events across the world and has sold over 10 million albums worldwide. A recipient of two Golden Globe Awards and GQ magazine's Man of the Year nominations, Cullum will play in Tbilisi following his appearance at the 2016 Personal Fest in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires.
The Georgian jazz festival will then move to the Tbilisi Event Hall for the second show of the annual event, where the November 11 concert will feature the Nicholas Payton Trio, led by American trumpeter and pianist Nicholas Payton.
Grammy winner Payton will take to the stage alongside Vicente Archer on bass and Bill Stewart on drums to showcase the performing style that was praised for "genre-defying solos" by Chicago Tribune newspaper.
On the following day, November 12, Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer and her band will perform for in Georgia's capital. Dulfer received a Grammy Award nomination for her debut album Sexuality and is looking to release her latest work this year. During her music career she has performed alongside celebrated global music figures including Prince, Pink Floyd and Maceo Parker.
Concluding the 2016 Tbilisi Jazz Festival, American singer and 2014 Grammy winner Gregory Porter will entertain music lovers with a show on November 13. The Sacramento-born vocalist has been hailed for "voice and musicality to be reckoned with" by the BBC, while the music review website www.allmusic.com said the American was "up there with Jose James as the next big male vocal jazz star".
The 2016 Tbilisi Jazz Festival is being held within the Check in Georgia program - the Georgian Government's year-long cultural project uniting dozens of festivals, concerts and shows across the country. The festival was established as an annual event in 1998. It was considered a successor to the maiden Soviet Georgian jazz event that took place in 1978, 1986 and 1989.
Along with the Black Sea Jazz Festival in Georgia's seaside city Batumi, the event aimed to bring international jazz talent to Georgia every year.
