The United Kingdom’s new Ambassador to Georgia Justin McKenzie Smith has begun his activities in Georgia by supporting and promoting educational ties between Georgia and the UK.
Smith, who replaced outgoing Alexandra Hall Hall as UK Ambassador, hosted a reception yesterday to bid farewell to more than a dozen Georgian student recipients of Chevening Scholarships, who were selected for the 2016-17 academic year to continue their education at a university in the UK.
I am delighted that one of my first duties since arriving in Georgia is to wish this year’s Georgian Chevening Scholars well as they leave for the UK,” said Smith.
This year we are able to support 17 Georgian professionals and future leaders to study in British universities. Three of them will be fully funded by the Bank of Georgia, and I am very grateful to them for their continued support of the scheme,” he said.

The UK Ambassador stressed the Chevening Scholarships showed the UK’s strong commitment to the future of the UK’s relationship with Georgia.
Chevening is a UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. They’ve been awarded annually since 1983.
Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of awards – Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships – the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world.
Chevening offers a unique opportunity for future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from all over the world to develop professionally and academically, network extensively, experience UK culture, and build lasting positive relationships with the UK, the Chevening Scolarships webpage read.
