The Patriarchate has issued a statement saying Kiev’s current situation "clearly shows how unstable peace can be worldwide”.

A statement released today by the office of the Patriarch said Georgia prayed for the devastating situation in Ukraine to resolve.

"Georgia has a very special relationship with Ukraine and, naturally, we take the suffering of our brothers close to our hearts, and day and night we beg almighty God to let peace reign throughout the world,” the statement said.

"The Maidan is literally fraught with victims and injured. We offer sincere condolences to the victim’s families – deceased Zurab Khurtsia’s family is among them – and pray for their immortal souls,” the statement read.

The Georgian Patriarchate urged the opposing sides in Kiev to make concessions with each other to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
