A twenty-year-old fencer is celebrating today after winning the Under 23 European Fencing Championship.
Sandro Bazadze is a member of the Georgian fencing team taking part in the tournament, currently being held in Tbilisi.
The tournament began yesterday and medals were drawn today for epee individual women and sabre individual men.
Bazadze knocked off 28 other contestants to win the male tournament. Of the 29 participants in the event, four were Georgian.
Bazadze defeated eight opponents to gain the gold medal. Second place was awarded to Belarus athlete Serhei Shachanin and third place went to Italy’s Luka Kuratoli.
Four Georgian women were also represented in the female tournament but they did not achieve success. The winner in this category was Italy’s Brenda Briasco.
The seventh European Fencing Championship will continue until June 28. In total, 198 participants from 28 European countries have registered to take part in this event.
The opening ceremony was attended by Georgia’s Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Levan Kipiani and President of the European Fencing Confederation Frantisek Janda.
