Germany has given the green light to Georgia to sign the Association Agreement (AA) with the European Union (EU) and its member countries.

The German Federal Government officially gave approval for Georgia and Moldova to sign the important trade document on June 27 at a meeting yesterday. Cabinet said the signature would aim to deepen the political and economic relations between the two countries and the EU.

"The agreements are a contribution to the strengthening of peace, stability and prosperity in our neighborhood,” said the German Government on its website after the Cabinet meeting.

Democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms were named as "important areas of cooperation” with EU countries and Georgia and Moldova.

"The establishment of a comprehensive free trade area is also planned,” the website read.

"It provides not only the reduction of tariff rates, but also the adoption of standards and norms of the EU. So [signing the agreements] can make an important contribution to reforms in the partner countries.”

Georgia and Moldova are scheduled to each sign their respective AA document with the EU on June 27 in Brussels. The documents were initialed on November 29, 2013 in the framework of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius.
