President and PM congratulate Ukraine on successful election

Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili are congratulating the people of Ukraine and President elect for successfully and peacefully carrying out a presidential election on Sunday.

President Margvelashvili heralded the Presidential election as "Ukrainians firm will for political consolidation and aspiration to Euro integration processes”.

In a written statement issued by the Press Office of the President’s Administration, Margvelashvili said Georgia put "great importance” on its relationship with Ukraine as the two countries were linked with a traditional friendly bond.

"We have a common goal – European choice and Georgia and Ukraine continues on this way with very firm steps,” Margvelashvili said.

In Ukraine, billionaire Petro Poroshenko was elected as the country’s new president after gaining 54 percent of all votes, the Central Elections Commission reported.

Margvelashvili talked to Poroshenko on phone today and congratulated him in person. The latter invited the Georgian President to his inauguration ceremony that is scheduled in June.

While the election results are still to be finalized, President Margvelashvili strongly believed that through joint efforts of Ukrainian citizens, the country would overcome all the difficulties that were laid before them.

The same opinion was shared in the congratulation message of PM Irakli Garibashvili: "Our countries are united with shared aspirations - Georgia and Ukraine have a firm will to continue European integration process, which will bring welfare and stability to our countries.”

Garibashvili also congratulated Petro Poroshenko on his victory in Ukraine’s presidential election said that Georgia "valued highly traditionally friendly relations between the Georgian and Ukrainian people, which had turned into good neighborly and close partnership between the countries.”

The Georgian President’s statement also said Georgia supported the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine by internationally recognised borders.

Poroshenko, a candy tycoon known as the ‘Chocolate King’, is a seasoned politician known for his pro-European Union views.
