Massimiliano D'Antuono, the Italian Ambassador to Georgia, on Wednesday said he was “optimistic” about the Georgian Government’s implementation of the recommendations outlined by the European Union for opening accession talks with the country.

In his remarks, D'Antuono noted the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s visit to Brussels, as his first official trip, was “very positive”.

Georgia achieved the most important stage, becoming a candidate country for EU membership. There are now nine steps to take to start accession talks. [...] I am optimistic that this will happen. When I talk to the members of the [Georgian] Government, I see that there is a strong will to achieve these results”, D'Antuono said.

The Italian diplomat also reviewed the parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 26, by saying that “processes are organised very well”.

He further added that “whatever the outcome and whoever wins”, the international community, the EU and Italy were “ready to cooperate” with the winning Government.
