Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday said the country’s accession to the European Union was “remaining on the agenda”.
In his remarks over ongoing public protests in the country following the Government’s announcement of the delay of EU accession talks until 2028, Samkharadze stressed there had been “no change” in the process, describing it as “ongoing”.
The issue of Georgia's accession to the European Union is already on the agenda and will remain so, because we have undertaken obligations under the Association Agreement [with the EU], and this is also a constitutional obligation. Accordingly, the work will continue. Demands in this regard are groundless - nothing has changed, the process is still ongoing”, the Parliament official said.
Samkharadze also highlighted the Government was “committed” to its obligations related to European integration.
He further reviewed domestic opposition’s calls for early elections, and said the topic had been “removed from the parliamentary agenda”, as the claims were “lacking credibility”.
