Ahmed Al Khateeb, the Minister of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, on Friday highlighted the “crucial role” of economic diversification, particularly in the tourism sector, during his address at the opening of the World Tourism Day event in Tbilisi.
Speaking at the international gathering hosted by the Georgian capital for the first time, the official stressed “peace is the basis for travellers and tourists", while expressing hope for a “harmonious world as the tourism sector continues to recover and grow”.
The official pointed out that tourism contributed “significantly” to both the global economy and employment, saying, "today, 10 percent is our contribution to the world economy and eight to nine percent to employment, both in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere”.
He further noted that while Saudi Arabia was an oil-producing nation with “vast reserves”, there was a need to develop other sectors, particularly tourism, to ensure sustainable economic growth.
As delegates from over 40 countries, heads of international organisations, and tourism industry leaders gathered for the event, Al Khateeb expressed gratitude for the “warm welcome” in Georgia and emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in promoting tourism.
