Police arrest 14 on drug violations across Georgia

Georgia's Interior Ministry on Tuesday said law enforcement officers had arrested 14 individuals on drug-related charges, including 10 for drug-dealing, in capital Tbilisi, eastern Kakheti and western Adjara regions.

The Ministry said the arrests had been made on charges of illegal purchase and storage of “large and particularly large” amounts of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and illegal planting and cultivation of marijuana, with the detained individuals including Georgian and foreign citizens, some with past criminal records.

The seized substances include heroin, tetrahydrocannabinol, methamphetamine, amphetamine, marijuana, methadone, buprenorphine, alpha PVP recovered from the arrested individuals’ houses, during their personal search and from spots referred to by the offenders.

Electronic scales, adhesive tapes and a “large amount of money” allegedly obtained from sale of drugs were also seized.

The offences are punishable by 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
