Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday expressed his “frustration” over the visiting German Bundestag members' “disrespectful actions, categorising” Georgian officials by rank.
Papuashvili emphasised behaviour of the representatives of the German Bundestag “contradicted” the cooperative relationship Georgia had with Europe.
When a guest comes to you, categorises people in your home by rank, and then starts choosing with whom it is appropriate to talk and with whom it is not, then you must understand that this is not the Europe that we, Georgians, are the co-creators of”, Papuashvili noted.
In his social media message the Parliament Speaker also extended his gratitude to Nikoloz Samkharadze, the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Georgian Parliament, who on Friday met with the speakers of the factions within the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag.
Thanks to Nika Samkharadze for meeting with the Bundestag members below him in rank”, the Parliament Speaker said.
Earlier Samkharadze met with the representatives of the German Bundestag in the discussion and informed them about the “difficult” situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia, Parliament’s press office said.
He also reviewed “heavy” statements made by Michael Roth, the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag, during his visit to Tbilisi in May amid protest rallies against the Government-introduced controversial law on transparency of foreign influence and expressed his concern that a high-ranking German official had “insulted the Georgian people and the Georgian Church”.
Ulrich Lechte, member of the German Bundestag and representative of the Free Democratic Party, claimed the Bundestag delegation had “no opportunity to meet with the authorities, because they refused to receive us”, he said at the summary press conference held at the German Embassy in the country.
