Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office, has reported a decline in the number of asylum seekers from Georgia to the bloc’s member states in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2023.
The latest update this week has indicated a reduction in asylum applications by Georgian citizens across nearly all EU member states, including Germany, which had previously seen the highest number of submissions.
Eurostat said 1,395 Georgian citizens sought asylum in Germany in the first half of this year, down from 5,155 in the first half of 2023. Asylum applications from Georgian nationals have also decreased in other EU countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Greece.
Germany classified Georgia as a country of safe origin last year, leading to Georgian citizens seeking asylum in the country having to prove they are being persecuted or having their individual and human rights violated in their home country.
