The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia on Friday charged one individual for allegedly handing over “defectively constructed” residential flats to 52 citizens in the Vashlijvari settlement, a residential district in the country’s capital Tbilisi.
The charges came after an investigation carried out by the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs revealed the founder of Tori construction company had built a residential block in the settlement and handed over premises for use after signing purchase agreements with buyers.
The body said the building’s load-bearing structures had started to crack in 2022, before developing a rupture in concrete. It added engineering examination had shown the construction’s load-bearing structures contained fibreglass reinforcement in contravention of Government decrees, construction rules and legislation.
The defective accommodation had resulted in about ₾10.1 million ($3.7 mln) in material damage, the Office said, adding the building’s deformations belonged to the category of “very severe damage” and were “unfit for operation”.
It added the alleged offender was arrested on Thursday, with the crime punishable by imprisonment from four to six years.
