Georgian Public Defender Levan Ioseliani on Saturday congratulated Georgian citizens on Constitution Day, marking the annual date of its adoption in 1995, the Public Defender's Office said.

Ioseliani highlighted the Constitution as the supreme law protecting and regulating the legal rights of the society, establishing fundamental norms for the democratic development of the country, economic freedom, and a legal and social state.

“The second chapter of the Constitution of Georgia refers to the fundamental human rights, based on which the Public Defender supervises the protection of human rights and freedoms within the territory of Georgia, reveals the facts of their violation, and promotes the restoration of violated rights”, the Public Defender said.

He added that the document, adopted in 1995 by the then composition of the Georgian Parliament, was based on the historical and legal heritage of the Constitution of 1921.

Under the Constitution, Georgia was recognised as an independent, united and indivisible state throughout the territory of the country, including Georgia's Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia regions.

The document was adopted with 159 votes and declared the country as a democratic state.
