Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Saturday highlighted the Constitution Day of Georgia in his social media post, marking the annual date of its approval in 1995.
On August 24, 1995, the then composition of the Parliament of Georgia adopted the supreme law of the country, a new edition of the Constitution, which entered into force in 1995 on the day of the recognition of the powers of the newly elected Parliament.
Under the Constitution, Georgia was recognized as an independent, united and indivisible state throughout the country, including Georgia's Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) and Abkhazia regions.
The document was adopted with 159 votes against eight and declared the country as a democratic state.
Georgia adopted its first constitution three years after the country gained independence from Russia in 1918, four days later the country again fell to occupation by Soviet forces.
Adopted in 1995, Georgia’s current constitution was modelled after the 1921 document.
