Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Monday said the Government's goal was to make the country a “place of peace”.
In his remarks, Kadagishvili noted the Government’s “only requirement” was that the domestic non-governmental sector be “as transparent as all other sectors” in the country.
Kadagishvili also commented on information released by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which last week alleged the United States-based National Endowment for Democracy had “rallied support for and instigated protests in Georgia against the foreign agents bill” earlier this year, in reference to the controversial law on transparency of foreign influence adopted by the Government in the spring.
We know that NED is fully accountable to the United States Government. We demand elementary transparency so that the public knows that the non-governmental sector acts in accordance with the law and in the interests of the public, does not violate the law and is not involved in pre-election manipulations”, he said.
The official also added it was “not in the interest” of the Georgian Government to “be a participant in confrontations between major powers”.
