The Office of the Public Defender of Georgia on Tuesday said it was inquiring into the recent tragic fire incident that claimed the lives of two minors in the country’s western city of Zugdidi and would implement “all appropriate measures” within its authority to respond to this incident.

The body also noted that the Public Defender Levan Ioseliani expressed condolences to the families, relatives, and friends of the deceased minors.

Unfortunately, there are serious challenges in the country regarding the proper strengthening and support of families with children. The existing social system and municipal programmes do not adequately respond to the individual needs of families with children, including ensuring a safe environment for the life and health of children,” the Public Defender’s Office pointed out.

The Public Defender has been constantly calling on state agencies to take all effective steps to improve the social and economic conditions of families in poverty and to create mechanisms for the protection of children and the long-term strengthening of their families, the body added.
