Kakha Kaladze, Tbilisi Mayor and Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday highlighted the importance of conducting an investigation into the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia.
Speaking to the press on the 16th anniversary of the conflict, Kaladze stressed it was “crucial for the Georgian people to know the truth about the events through a fair investigation”.
What did we gain from this war? We lost territories, heroic soldiers and civilians died, and families became internally displaced. Sixteen years have passed, and our country has not healed these wounds to this day. Thus, it is imperative that an investigation be conducted so that everything falls into place”, he said.
The ruling party has also pledged that the war would “receive a proper legal assessment” after the parliamentary elections set for October 26, adding the United National Movement opposition party, in power a the time of the conflict, would face a “collective punishment for their treasonous crimes against the country and its people”.
