PM praises Georgian athletes for their latest success at Paris Olympics

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday congratulated weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze and heavyweight freestyle wrestler Geno Petriashvili on winning gold medals at the ongoing Summer Olympic Games in Paris. 

I would like to express deepest gratitude to Lasha Talakhadze, who is already a legend and has solidified his status with his third consecutive Olympic gold. We were especially delighted with Geno’s victory; he deservedly and honourably won the Olympic gold medal,” the PM made the comments to the local media.

Talakhadze secured his gold medal after lifting 215 kg in the snatch and 255 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 470 kg, while Petriashvili gained the victory after defeating his Iranian rival Amir Hossein Zare in the men’s 125 kg category finals with a score of 10:9, on Saturday.

The head of the Government highlighted that Georgia now had a unique opportunity to secure a place among the top 20 nations in the Olympics medal table.

Kobakhidze added he had consultations with the Parliament Speaker to award the medalists by the Order of Honor and the Olympic champions by the St. George’s Order of Victory.
