The Georgian Environmental Protection Ministry’s Department of Environmental Supervision has issued 6,683 fines for violations of emissions regulations after inspecting vehicles in the country's largest cities over 11 months.
The body said on Friday its professionals had inspected the vehicles in the capital Tbilisi, the central-eastern city of Rustavi, and Kutaisi and Batumi in the west from last year’s September.
It also said most of the fines - 3,177 - had been issued in the capital, with 1,330 fines handed out in Kutaisi, 1,145 in Batumi and 1,031 in Rustavi.
It also added that 4,142 fines had been issued to personal vehicle drivers, 2,256 for minibus drivers, 277 for truck drivers and eight for bus drivers.
Individuals violating the norms are penalised between ₾100-600 ($37-223), while legal entities are fined from ₾500-3000 ($185-1,115).
