Georgia has secured the third position in the world ranking for freedom from physical violence by authorities over the past 11 years, according to the latest ranking by Varieties of Democracy, an institution studying the qualities of governments.

The country’s annual assessment improved to a 90.3 percent on a 100 percent assessment system, reflecting an advancement in ensuring freedom from political assassinations and torture by government.

The change follows Georgia's ranking in 2012, when it was placed 122nd in the world and was considered the “most perilous” country in Europe after Russia in terms of physical violence from the authorities.

In the 2023 results, Georgia has outpaced several Group of Seven, NATO, and European Union member states as well as developed countries, including the United Kingdom, Poland, Turkey, North Macedonia, and Israel.

The project for the ranking is led by investigators, project managers, regional managers, over 134 coordinators and about 4,000 experts worldwide.
