János Bóka, the Hungarian Minister for European Union Affairs, on Monday commended Georgia for its “progress and commitment” to European integration.
In his remarks, Bóka highlighted the importance of a “consistent, merit-based” European Union enlargement policy.
We will maintain a consistent and merit based enlargement policy in respect of all accession countries. Enlargement is one of the most successful policies of the European Union. To preserve this favourable tendency, it is essential to keep enlargement policy merit-based, balanced and credible”, he said.
The Hungarian official also noted Georgia's commitment to its European path and the “significant” progress the country had made.
I also commend Georgia for the European choice and for the progress they have made. I believe it is important to continue our dialogue and keep the country anchored in the European structures”, he concluded.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said earlier this month the EU should be “absolutely happy” that Georgia wished to join the bloc, adding Brussels should “do everything in its power” to ensure that “Georgia becomes a member of the European family as soon as possible”.
